Devils prevail on the road

ASU placed four players in double figures, led by Jahii Carson's 20 points, as it remained undefeated in Pac-12 play notching a road conference win, 72-62 at Oregon State on Thursday night.

Arizona State (14-2, 3-0 Pac-12) trailed for the first six minutes in Corvallis, and after tying the score at 15-15 saw Oregon State (10-5, 0-2) reclaim the lead 28-21 with 5:04 left in the period. The Sun Devils behind Jahii Carson and Jonathan Gilling outscored the Beavers 15-2 the rest of the half and went down to their locker room ahead 36-30.

The visitors couldn't have asked for a better start to the second stanza, as a couple of Carrick Felix dunks along with a tandem of three pointers by Carson and Evan Gordon gave ASU a 52-37 advantage with 14:18 left to play in the contest.

Free throw shooting has been the team's Achilles heel all season, and charity strip points were in great demand for the next nine plus minutes as ASU scored just two field goals. Alas, four missed free throws mixed in with ten straight missed field goal attempts saw Oregon State go on a 14-3 run as they cut down the deficit to 55-51 with 5:29 remaining.

ASU was able to mount one last defensive stand, limiting the hosts to just two field goals the rest of the way as Carson scored six more points down the stretch.

Felix recorded his fifth double double of the season with 18 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Gilling posted 14 points with 10 of them uncharacteristically coming in the paint. Jordan Bachynski recorded ten points (eight in the second half), nine rebounds and four blocks. Devon Collier paced Oregon State with 18 points.

The Sun Devils struggled at the line going 8-18 but took advantage of the Beavers' Eric Moreland's suspension and had a commanding 45-30 edge on the glass. They also committed just nine turnovers. Oregon State was limited to just 37.3 percent shooting from the field.

ASU concludes its road trip with a visit to Eugene on Sunday to meet another unbeaten conference foe, the Oregon Ducks, who tonight handed Arizona its first loss of the year, 70-66. Tip-off in Eugene is at 7 pm MT.
