ASU leading for Randall

When you know a school as well as Damarious Randall knows Arizona State, there may be not all that much new to learn about the football program. Nonetheless, last weekend was a very productive official visit for the Mesa (Ariz.) Community College defensive back. Devils Digest caught up with Randall to see if this one time Sun Devil pledge could be joining the 2013 class once again.

"I got to learn more about the academics and see the inside of the stadium which I have never seen," Randall said, "so that was different from the other times I visited Arizona State. But a lot of the other stuff they were talking about was the same like before, like I can come in and make an impact right away. They really refreshed to me how much I was needed in their recruiting plan and how important I am for them to help them win a Pac-12 and national championship.

"The coaches said that I can play either corner or safety and they need someone at either position to come in and play right away. So they will plug me in wherever they need me the most. They compared me a little to Alden Darby who played both (positions). So it's exciting that they see me playing two positions. They really want to me to return punts there too and give the offense good field position."

Randall was hosted Sun Devil cornerback Robert Nelson, who gave the Mesa standout a player's perspective of the program.

"He told me about how the coaches build up your character," Randall commented. "How they try to impact your life outside of football and help you be a better man. School wise, as long as you put in the effort they will help you with tutors to make sure you get good grades and get your degree."

In 2012 the 6-0 185-pound Damarious Randall posted 70 tackles, nine interceptions, 19.5 yds average on punt returns and four touchdowns. Following his sophomore season at Mesa he was voted first team NJCAA All-American, ACCAC Defensive Player of the Year, and ACCAC first team defensive back and returner.

On October 30th Randall committed to ASU, but in December he decommitted as he wanted to visit other schools. Ultimately, the only official trip he took to date outside of ASU was last weekend to TCU. The defensive back indicated to Devils Digest that he is ready to bring his recruitment process to an end.

"Honestly, I don't think I'm going to take anymore visits," Randall claimed. "ASU is definitely in the lead right now. That's' where I was planning to go to before everything blew up a little bit. That's where I feel comfortable at. I mean I live on Scottsdale Road right across from the football stadium.

"I'm not getting out until May and if I go to Arizona State it will be easier for me to pick up stuff than if I went to a school far away."

Having said all that, what was holding back the defensive back from committing on Sunday while on his trip?

"If you want an honest answer," Randall said, "if today was signing day I would sign with Arizona State. On February 6th I will sign with Arizona State. The coaches refreshed a lot of things for me which reminded why I committed to Arizona State in the first place.

"But right now my parents want me to wait until signing day to commit but I doubt I take anymore visits because I have to focus on my school work. I think this coming week I will make my decision."
