Newcomers Practice Report

The wait is over! 29 newcomers, including 19 scholarship players suited up for ASU's first Football practice since the spring scrimmage. Even the usual August heat, couldn't temper the hustle and passion the Sun Devil newcomers showed on the practice field. Here are a few quotes following the first practice:

Head coach Dirk Koetter:

"First. It's great to be out here finally practicing! That's awesome. We got a lot of talent and speed in the class, and they were competitive and worked hard. That's all you can ask for. 12 out of the 29 guys out here participated in our summer conditioning program, and you could really tell a difference who participated and who didn't. The main conditioning session will be today (Thursday) afternoon; we're going to run 16 110-yard dashes. That's tough on anybody (smile). We just try to teach them how we practice, so when the varsity comes in the newcomers aren't overwhelmed by the speed of practice. We just want to get them oriented, and so far they have been doing good job learning."

Wide Receiver Daryl Lightfoot:

"It was hot out there (smile). I think as a team we did great. There were a lot of miscommunications at first, but that's how it usually starts. Once we got practice really going, it went really smooth. If I don't think I'm going to redshirt, my mind set has to be different than the other freshmen. I really take heed to what the coaches are saying. I need to get the drills right today, so when we go up to camp T I'll be ready. My mind set has to be right from the start. When you have 103 players around you, you want to know exactly where you're going. You don't want to look around and see what others are doing."

Cornerback Lamar Baker:

"The first practice was VERY interesting. I'm getting the hang of it and having some fun. I want to get to get out of practices the mental part of the game, and also the speed which is very different from high school."

Running Back Cornell Candidate:

"Practice was great. I really enjoyed it. There was a lot of enthusiasm out there. It felt good. I want to accomplish getting everything right, so when the varsity comes in we don't have to haggle over little details."
