Carson's career night fuels road win

If it's a Tuesday and you try to attend one of Las Vegas' famed shows on the strip you're usually out of luck, as they take the night off. But if ventured slightly off the strip tonight into the Thomas and Mack Center, you were treated to one of the best performances Sin City has recently seen. ASU's Jahii Carson scored a career-high 40 points as he led the Sun Devils to an 86-80 win over UNLV.

Jahii Carson, who shot 16-25 from the field, 2-3 from three-point range, and had seven assists and three rebounds, wasn't the only catalyst of Arizona State's (4-0) win over UNLV (2-2). Jermaine Marshall and Jordan Bachynski continued their solid season performance, as the former scored 20 points and collected three blocks, while the ASU center extended his double double streak to four games this season collecting 17 points and 13 rebounds, to go along with four blocks.

The Runnin' Rebels came out of the gates with a lot of energy and early on dominated the boards especially on the offensive side. Yet their poor shooting from the field and at the line allowed the Sun Devils to stay in the game, as their lead never extended beyond four and enjoyed just a 38-34 lead.

Early in the second half it seemed as if the hosts would be able to create more distance between them and ASU, but Carson and Bachynski not only prevented that from happening but aided ASU to comeback and led 68-65 with 7:37 left. It was an advantage that they didn't relinquish until the final buzzer.

No other ASU players scored in double figures but true freshman Egor Koulechov posted ten rebounds and four assists, while Jonathan Gilling added eight rebounds and six assists. After trailing the hosts heavily on the boards in the first half, ASU was only out rebounded 55-48, 17-14 on the offensive glass. The Sun Devils shot 44.3 percent from the field, but just 55 percent from the line. It did have nine blocks and just seven turnovers.

UNLV was led by Roscoe Smith who had 18 points and 21 rebounds.

Up net for ASU is a Friday night home game versus Bradley. Tip-off is 7 p.m. from Wells Fargo Arena.
