Smith gives high marks to ASU's Junior Day

Saturday's Junior Day in Tempe attracted one of the best prospects nationally of the 2015 class. Emmitt Smith, ranked by's as the nation's no. 4 middle linebacker was naturally the highest ranking visitor at that event and Devils Digest caught up with the Bowling Green, Ky. four-star prospect to discuss his experience in Tempe.

"Junior Day was great," Smith said. "We got to tour the facilities, locker room, talk to the coaches and players and go to the basketball game. Meeting the coaching staff was the best part of the day. Coach Long is the coach recruiting me and he's the one who got me to get out here. I talked to the linebackers coach (Keith Patterson) and he runs the same defense I play in right now. He said that if I came here he wants me to do at the next level what I do right now which is blitz and play the run well.

"I know I have to improve my play. I need to use my hands more, shed blocks but I have good speed. I run a 4.6."

The 6-2 255 Emmitt Smith said that Arizona State head Coach, Todd Graham, was impressed by his abilities, especially with his quickness and closing speed to the ball.

Smith visited Louisville, Kentucky, Cincinnati and Indiana and plans to visit Tennessee this weekend and a probably several others over spring and summer.

"Right now Arizona State has been the best visit I took," Smith admitted. "I didn't even mind the rain. I loved the uniforms and the campus is just wonderful. I just like everything about the school.

"I like the way they play defense too. They go fast and hit hard that's what I like."

Smith showed interest in the Sun Devils several months ago because his father lives in Chandler. "Playing close to him would be nice," Smith remarked. "It's a school that I could see myself officially visiting. Academics are very important to me and I know they (ASU) graduate their players."
