Four-star linebacker has ASU on short list

Time will tell which school will land the services of Khaylan Thomas but one thing is for certain, the coveted Etiwanda 2015 standout has not been shy of how enthusiastic he has been towards Arizona State.

Whether it's through interviews or recently sharing the recruiting materials he has been receiving from the Sun Devils, Thomas has held Arizona State in high regard for a while now.

"Recruiting is going really good," Thomas said. "I really like the school and I am very interested in them. Coach Patterson is recruiting me and he saw me at spring practice. He wants me to be a Sun Devil and he likes me because he knows I can fit in his defense. They see me at SAM linebacker and he told me that I'm a big body that can move well from sideline to sideline.

"I really like how this is an attacking defense that has a lot of blitzes and creates a lot of turnovers. I consider myself a fast linebacker that can tackle well, but one thing I can get better at is being a vocal leader on the field."

The 6-2 213-pound Khaylan Thomas visited Tempe in March as ASU went through its spring practice. Several aspects stood out to the linebacker during that trip.

"I really liked the campus and how everything was close to each other," Thomas remarked. "The coaches and players really made me feel at home. I was really comfortable there. It's a good program that wants to win championships.

"The thing that impressed me the most was seeing the freshman dorms. I've never seen freshman dorms on my other visits, and I liked how they were close to the facility and the stadium because that is where you were going to spend a lot of your time when you're there."

Thomas, who is ranked 8th in the nation by among 2015 middle linebackers. Had 79 tackles, five sacks and three forced fumbles for the Eagles during the 2013 season. He also scored two touchdowns on offense. In our interview he listed a Top 5 (in no particular order) of Arizona State, Arizona, UCLA, Oregon State and Miami. The linebacker said that aside from ASU he already visited both Los Angeles schools and Arizona.

"I don't have any plans right now to visit other schools before the season starts," Thomas stated. "But I know that I am going to visit more schools. I just don't know which ones yet."

When asked if Arizona State will receive an official visit later in the year, Thomas replied: "most definitely." The linebacker does not have a timetable to when he will make his decision, but knows that he won't commit before his season starts and will "wait out" the recruiting process.

"I want to go to a school that has a good defense and that I can see myself fitting into," Thomas said. "Academics are very important to me too. I'm just really looking for the school I feel most comfortable at."
