Sun Devils add O'Field to 2015 class

Potent junior college wing scorer Maurice O'Field committed to Arizona State Friday while on his official visit to the school.

New Arizona State coach Bobby's Hurley's biggest roster question mark for 2015-16 may be at small forward and Friday he made a move to help solidify the position.

The Sun Devils, according to a source, secured a commitment from 6-foot-6, 215 pound Midland (Texas) Junior College wing forward Maurice O'Field during O'Field's official visit to the school.

O'Field had been committed to Hurley at Buffalo in March but did not sign a National Letter of Intent with the school. Marquette, Texas-San Antonio and Virginia Tech were out suitors.

A Cleveland, Ohio, native, O'Field averaged 15.8 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.9 assists last season as a freshman for Midland. He'll be available immediately with three seasons of eligibility.

ASU signed combo guard Andre Spight, a 6-foot-2 standout who averaged 15 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists at South Plains Community College in Levelland, Texas, under former coach Herb Sendek.

Since arriving in Tempe, Hurley has added 6-foot-8, 240 pound forward junior college forward Obinna Oleka, and 6-foot-1 Buffalo point guard transfer Shannon Evans.

Oleka averaged 25.6 points and 13.6 rebounds at State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota in 2013-14 before sitting out last season while attending Cecil Community College in North East, Maryland. Originally a Texas-signee who was later released fro his National Letter of Intent, Oleka will have two years of remaining eligibility and be available immediately.

Evans earned second-team league honors in the Mid-American Conference in 2014-15 with averages of 15.4 points, 3.2 rebounds and 4.6 assists while shooting 38.2 percent from 3-point range. Evans will have to sit out this season and then have two seasons of eligibility.

The Sun Devils have eight returning scholarship players and now have four newcomers expected to be on scholarship, leaving one additional scholarship currently available for the 2015 class.

Last month ASU released 6-foot-6 forward Sai Tummala and 6-foot-8 forward Connor MacDougall from their scholarships. Tummala is expected to graduate this summer and transfer with the ability to play elsewhere immediately for his remaining year of eligibility. MacDougall is likely to attend South Mountain Community College as a sophomore before transferring back to the Division I level. Neither player saw much action last season.

Hurley also released 2015 signee Dominic Green, a 6-foot-6 small forward from Hazen High School in Renton, Washington, from his Letter of Intent.
