The 3-star offensive guard from Belton High School in Belton, Tex., tweeted out his top nine schools Friday afternoon.
The 6-foot-4, 290-pound guard said he holds 16 total scholarship offers and has been interested in the Sun Devils a long time. He said he visited the school twice already, for the team's game against Stanford last season and for an unofficial in May.
Shackelford cited his relationship with offensive line coach Chris Thomsen and graduate assistant offensive line coach Josh Martin as things that have sustained his interested in playing in Tempe.
“I’ve always liked Arizona State,” Shackelford said. “Coach Thomsen and coach Martin are awesome coaches and guys and they’ve been keeping in contact with me pretty regularly. So I’ve built a good relationship with coach Martin, with both of them actually and my family really liked all the coaching staff when we went up there to visit and the place was nice.”
Going forward in his recruitment, he said the ASU coaches just have keep doing what they have been doing.
But, he will be keeping his eye on any new offensive line recruits that commit to ASU.
“They’ve done a good job recruiting me and I like the coaching staff and the offensive line coaches so honestly I think they’re going to be up there no matter what they do,” Shackelford said. “Unless they get an inside commitment and there’s no more spots left they’ll definitely be up there on the list.”
After his unofficial visit to ASU in May, Shackelford’s recruitment heated up. He said he told the ASU coaches after the visit that he was going to see what new schools show interest.
This past week he said he took unofficial visits to Illinois and Purdue. Both teams made the cut on his list. With the remaining time left in the summer, he said he might take visits to Kansas State again, Tulsa and Iowa State.
Even though it is only about halfway through the summer, Shackelford said he has been thinking about this official visits. So far, he said he is set on ASU, Oklahoma State and Kansas State with two more to spare.
He reiterated that he will be keeping an eye on those schools that get commitments from other guards. So far ASU has one guard commitment from 3-star offensive guard Marshal Nathe from Centennial High School in Peoria, Ariz.
Since he has already been to campus twice, Shackelford said he will not be making another unofficial visit to ASU.When it comes to his verbal commitment, Shackelford said he is thinking about an early August timeframe before two-a-day practices for his high school team. He said he wants to make his commitment so he can focus on the high school football season.
