Sophomore Kalen Ballage worked exclusively on defense at Devil backer in Arizona State's first preseason camp practice. That was the big story of the session, as well as how Todd Graham said the Sun Devils will utilize their defensive front. this season.
Graham said ASU will use two base defensive looks, with a 40-front (four down linemen) at times featuring a heavier end at the Devil position; junior Edmond Boateng is a good fit in that capacity and sophomore Chans Cox and sophomore Alani Latu may play that role as well.
Then ASU will also at times be in more of a 30 front (three down linemen) with the Devil backer being a stand up rusher. In these looks, Ballage or redshirt freshman Ismael Murphy-Richardson would probably be the player on the field. Like Ballage, true freshman Jay Jay Wilson has the potential to be a two-way player and could be tested out in such a role as well.
