Four-star McKnight likes ASU coaches

four-star wide receiver Steffon McKnight released a Top-5 recently that includes Arizona State even though he's yet to see the program in person.

Steffon McKnight likes the Arizona State coaching staff more than any other that is recruiting him right now, but the Sun Devils are still only No. 2 on his list.

The 4-star receiver out of Mira Mesa Senior High School in San Diego, California, confirmed that his top-5 remains in an order or UCLA, ASU, USC, Washington and then Nebraska.

He has also been paying close attention to Cal. The Golden Bears have extended a scholarship offer, he said, andd McKnight knows some players who have committed to Cal. Those recent commitments to Cal have piqued his interest and the Golden Bears might have a chance of jumping into his top-5 in place of Nebraska.

McKnight said the Sun Devil coaches are the reason the school is No. 2 on his list.

“It’s just really the number one reason, which is like the only reason, is the coaching staff,” McKnight said. “I really like the coaching staff. They seem like great people and they actually care about me a little bit more than just like as a football player. They actually want to help develop me.”

McKnight said he has the Bruins at No. 1 on his list is because he went on a visit there and felt at home.

As yet, McKnight has not been on ASU's campus but he wants to visit. The 6-foot-0, 157 pound receiver, with a verified 40-yard dash of 4.69 seconds, said his first official visit of the fall will be to ASU. He is not sure what weekend he will be in Tempe.

On his visit, McKnight will have a chance to meet face to face with coaches who have made such an impression on him.

It will not be the first time he has met with coaches in person. McKnight said one interaction with ASU wide receivers coach DelVaughn Alexander really impacted his recruitment.

McKnight said he had a conversation with Alexander at an ASU satellite camp in California and they did not talk about football. They discussed the issues going on in McKnight’s life.

,p> “He just came off kind of like as a father figure to me, as a mentor and I really liked that,” McKnight said. “He just kind of seems like he actually has my back, as least more than any of these other coaches do.”

When McKnight takes his official visit to ASU he is looking to have the same feeling he did at UCLA.

McKnight said he did not know what a school like ASU could do in the future to move up to No. 1 on his list. He said he will know more after all of his official visits, should commit after all five visits and might wait until signing day to make a commitment.

McKnight will make official visits to the schools in his top-5. He said he is not set on Cal replacing Nebraska and needs to do more research about Cal.
