Bates has high aspirations for this season

Jalen Bates doesn't just want to play as a true freshman. The Louisiana defensive end said he wants to win his position battle and get double digit sacks this season. Tuesday, he repped with the ones, a good sign for his opportunity to play in 2015.

True freshman Jalen Bates had two sacks and a pass break up working mostly with the third-team defense in Saturday's Camp Tontozona scrimmage.

It wasn't an anomaly. Every times Bates was on the first with the reserves last week at the training facility near Payson, he made plays.

Tuesday, ASU coaches rewarded Bates with some first-team reps and he responded with another impressive performance.

"I've made a huge jump," Bates said. "I think [the odds of playing are] pretty good if I keep making plays and playing fast, I'll be fine."

Bates said he came to ASU with a goal of not only staying off the redshirt list, but being a starter and making a major impact.

"My goals are to get 10 sacks and win my position battle and that's what I'm still trying to do."
