Arizona State assistant Brian Merritt fired by Bobby Hurley

Arizona State head coach Bobby Hurley has fired one of his basketball assistants after just one season.

Arizona State assistant coach Brian Merritt will not return to coach at ASU next season, per sources.

Merritt joined the Sun Devils’ staff shortly after ASU head coach Bobby Hurley was hired last April. Before coaching at ASU, Merritt was the Director of Recruiting for John Lucas Camps. ASU was Merritt’s first coaching job.

Merritt was the lead recruiter for 2016 power forward Thon Maker, who announced on Sunday, he will be applying for the NBA Draft instead of choosing to play for a collegiate team.

Ed Smith, Maker’s mentor, told Scout.com in April 2015 that ASU was added to Maker’s list of potential colleges due to a long-standing relationship between Smith and Merritt. Maker reportedly told DraftExpress.com that ASU was his top college option.

Merritt was arrested on the suspicion of DUI on Feb. 13 in Scottsdale. Merritt was not with ASU for about two weeks before returning to ASU’s practice on March 1
