Backups Dominate Tontozona Scrimmage

At the closing scrimmage of Camp Tontozona many of the fans stayed at home (gas crisis being the main culprit). The several hundred Sun Devils who made the ride up the hill, witnessed non-starters such as Sam Keller, Moey Mutz, Cornell Canidate, and Rudy Burgess strutting their skills, and proving that the team's depth in the skill positions is much improved over last year.

Keller confirmed once again why he's worthy of being Andrew Walter's backup. The true freshman was 7-15 for 151 yards and three touchdowns. Walter had a quiet 11-18 for 93 yards, and along with Kellen Bradley (0-1) were the only signal callers not to throw for scores. Chad Christensen was 4-6 for 47 yards and a touchdown, and Mike Affleck was a perfect 2-2 for 56 yards and a score of his own.

The ASU ground attack showed promise amassing 121 yards on 27 carries. The Sun Devil rushers were led by Cornell Canidate, (starting at third string) who had 46 yards on six carries. Starter Mike Williams piled 37 yards on nine attempts. Each of these two running backs scored a touchdown, as did Randy Hill on a goal line situation drill.

Moey Mutz has been a solid producer since spring practice, and following a successful mid-week scrimmage; the sophomore continued his momentum with three catches for 77 yards and a touchdown. He was slightly outdone by Rudy Burgess who shined on Saturday with 78 yards on three catches, and a team leading two touchdowns. The relatively unknown Steven Bisnett had two catches for 25 yards and a score. If anyone still needed to be convinced that Skyler Fulton is going to be Walter's proverbial go-to-guy, the scrimmage offered a ringing endorsement - the senior caught 6 balls for 65 yards. The other starter Daryl Lightfoot was more economical with three catches, 34 yards, and one touchdown.

On defense Jamar Williams, Brett Hudson, and Nick Baker each had a sack, while Gabe Reininger and Ishmael Thrower combined for another. Jimmy Verdon had a tackle for loss, and Mat Fawley, who started, had a pass breakup. Mike Davis blocked a field goal, and Jermaine McKinney a blocked punt. Sean Hinton had the lone interception in the game.

On special teams Ainsworth was 3-4 in field goals with his longest being a 51-yarder, while missing a 50-yard try. Tim Parker was 2-4 making a pair of 50 yard field goals, while missing from 35, 45. In the punting department, Parker was in prime form, as he punted six times for an average of 49.8, with his longest punt going for 60 yards. Backup Chris McDonald was solid with an average of 42 yards on four punts, and his longest going for 53 yards. He did however have one punt blocked.

Several Starters were held out of the game such as: Jason Shivers, Riccardo Stewart, and Mike Karney. Among the others not suiting up were Matt Mason, Lamar Baker, and Matt Miller.
