Friday evening's Territorial Cup marks the fifth installment of the rivalry in which Arizona State's Todd Graham and Arizona's Rich Rodriguez will lead their respective programs against one another.
The Sun Devils have won three of the four Territorial Cups played since Graham and Rodriguez took over as head coaches at ASU and Arizona, but the Wildcats' lone victory came in the most important game in the series as the Pac-12 South title was up for grabs in 2014.
Through the first four matchups between these two coaches, a number of important takeaways have come to light. In this week's edition of the 'Sun Devil Source Premium Report,' hosts Kerry Crowley and Chris Karpman dive into those takeaways and discuss how the first four installments of the rivalry between Graham and Rodriguez can help preview the fifth.
In ASU's three wins over Arizona since 2012, the Sun Devils have been able to run the ball effectively, as ASU had a 100-yard rusher in 2012 and 2013 as well as a pair of 100-yard rushers in the team's 2015 victory.
In ASU's lone loss in the series, the Sun Devils failed to gain momentum on the ground, and also lost the turnover battle in a 42-35 defeat in Tucson. Turnover margin has loomed large in all four Territorial Cups played since Graham and Rodriguez took over, and that should hold true again this season.
After finishing up their segment on the historical trends of the season, Kerry and Chris discuss Arizona's offensive and defensive schemes and highlight the ASU players who need to step up and have big games for the Sun Devils to clinch their fourth victory in five seasons.
Kerry and Chris talk about the importance of ASU's offensive line play, its ability to tackle in the open field and about turning freshman wide receiver N'Keal Harry into an X-factor against Arizona.
The episode concludes with Chris and Kerry offering their predictions for Friday's game, as well as a primer on where ASU could be headed this bowl season if the Sun Devils secure bowl eligibility with a victory over the Wildcats.
