Arizona State priority recruiting targets: Running Back

With the announced departure of Jason Lewis, Arizona State will return four scholarship running backs next year. It has one commit, Trelon Smith, and could add another running back in the 2017 class.

Arizona State appears set atop its 2017 depth chart at running back with Demario Richard and Kalen Ballage presumably returning for their senior seasons. Third-string redshirt freshman Nick Ralston is the top reserve and has played well in limited snaps.

High profile recruit Jason Lewis was a non-factor as a redshirt freshman and on Sunday announced via twitter his intent to transfer. The Sun Devils do have 2016 signee Tre Turner redshirting this year.

Currently the Sun Devils have one running back commitment in 2017, Texas three-star recruit Trelon Smith. Smith is a smaller, quick twitch type back who is more in line with the typical Air Raid style running backs than the players ASU has on its roster at the position.

A healthy scholarship count at running back is five or six, and ASU is currently projected to have five on its roster in 2017. So with the transfer of Lewis, ASU will take another prospect if it finds one it really likes. Preparing for the departure of Richard and Ballage following next season is an important item to take care of on the checklist now.

Out of the current group of priority targets, Texas four-star Eno Benjamin is the most likely to sign with ASU, as he is only prospect who has already officially visited the school. Benjamin, 5-foot-10, 203 pounds, has also visited Utah and Missouri, after being previously committed to Iowa. He's rushed for 2,500 yards as a senior with 30-plus touchdowns and is the No. 10 ranked running back recruit in the 2017 class.
