Running back should be a strength for Arizona State in 2017. The Sun Devils return experienced seniors Demario Richard and Kalen Ballage. Sophomore Nick Ralston played well in limited duty last year. 2017 signee Eno Benjamin, the program’s top ranked recruit, is already on campus and expected to compete for playing time this year. Tre Turner redshirted last year. Incoming freshman Trelon Smith looks to be headed for a redshirt season baring injuries ahead of him on the depth chart.
Benjamin and Ralston are the future at the position, both are more inside runners. Smith is more of the open field type. We expect ASU to be selective in this cycle at running back but with an eye for more play making open field type backs. The Sun Devils will take one running back, perhaps two if they get a second player they can't turn down.
Running backs coach John Simon is in his second year with the program and is viewed as a good recruiter which should help the Sun Devils efforts at the position this year.
