Newcomer Report

Through out the 2003 season, DevilsDigest will track the contributions of the team's first year players. The following are the newcomers' contributions in Arizona State's 26-16 win over the Utah State Aggies.

Offensively, redshirt freshman running back Loren Wade started the game at tailback, logging 14 carries for 58 yards. Wade also had a fumble on the one yard line that resulted in a touchback as the ball bounced out of the back of the end zone. Fellow redshirt freshman Randy Hill carried the ball 10 times for 47 yards, including a one yard touchdown run – his first one as a Sun Devil. He also had one catch for five Yards. Redshirt freshman Andrew Carnahan started at left tackle, while long snapper redshirt freshman Jason Burke had a decent outing on special teams. True freshman kicker Jesse Ainsworth hit the only extra point he attempted, and he also handled the kick off duties. Additional newcomers who saw playing time were redshirt freshman wide receiver Terry Richardson, and the tight end duo of redshirt freshman Jamaal Lewis and JC transfer Aaron Austin.

On defense, JC transfer cornerback Chris McKenzie led the defensive newcomers with six total tackles, and excelled once again on special teams. JC transfer linebacker Justin Burks had a total of five stops in a starting role. Defensive lineman, JC transfer Gabe Reininger and redshirt freshman Ali Likio, as well as redshirt freshman linebacker Jordan Hill all tallied one tackle each, as did JC transfer linebacker Ishmael Thrower. Other defenders participating were true freshman linebacker De'Andre Johnson redshirt freshman safety J.W. Lucas, and true freshmen safety Daniel Varvel, defensive end Kyle Caldwell, and linebacker Mark Washington.
