Newcomer Report

Through out the 2003 season, DevilsDigest will track the contributions of the team's first year players. The following are the newcomers' contributions in Arizona State's 45-17 loss to Oregon State.

Offensively, redshirt freshman running back Loren Wade carried the ball just two times, logging 20 yards. True freshman quarterback Sam Keller handled his highest number of snaps as a Sun Devil, throwing eight times, completing three for 57 yards, with one interception. Redshirt freshman Terry Richardson tied his season high for catches with four, which gained 79 yards. Redshirt freshman Andrew Carnahan started once again at left tackle, while redshirt freshman Jason Burke handled the long snapping duties. True freshman kicker Jesse Ainsworth hit his first field goal as a Sun Devil, connecting on his 34 yard attempt, in addition to making both of his extra points. Additional newcomers who saw playing time were redshirt freshman running back Randy Hill and JC transfer tight end Aaron Austin.

On defense, JC transfer Ishmael Thrower started the game at defensive end and had his best game so far as a Devil. He had five total tackles, with three for loss (total of 25 yards), and a sack. JC transfer Justin Burks started at linebacker, and tallied four total tackles with one going for a seven-yard sack. JC transfer cornerback Chris McKenzie also had a tackle for a loss (one yard), and had three total stops. True freshman defensive end Kyle Caldwell and redshirt freshman safety J.W. Lucas had two total tackles a piece, while the defensive linemen duo of redshirt freshman Ali Likio and JC transfer Gabe Reininger had one tackle each, with Reininger's going for a two yard loss. Other defensive players seeing playing time were redshirt freshman linebacker Jordan Hill and true freshman safety Daniel Varvel.
