2000: 7-5 overall; 5-3 WAC (fourth)

COACH: Fitz Hill -- First year as head coach

RETURNING STARTERS: 15; 9 offense, 4 defense, kicker, punter

PLAYERS TO WATCH: RB Deonce Whitaker, QB Marcos Arroyo, WR Casey Le Blanc, DB Willie Adams, LB Alvin Dean, DB Larry Thompson

PRIMARY STRENGTH: San Jose State will score points, thanks in part to the return of Deonce Whitaker at running back. With LaDainian Tomlinson gone, Whitaker picks up the flag as the league's premier player.

POTENTIAL PROBLEMS: This defense wasn't all that good last year. Unfortunately for the Spartans, the few stars of the show have graduated, leaving the new coaching staff to pick up the pieces.

OVERVIEW: Maybe new coach Fitz Hill, formerly an Arkansas assistant, can get these guys to play some defense. If he does, the Spartans will be among the league leaders, although a tough non-conference schedule (at USC, at Colorado, vs. Stanford, at Arizona State) is likely to weigh down the over record.

The Spartan have already lost to USC and were blown out by Colorado.
