Newcomer Report

Through out the 2003 season, DevilsDigest will track the contributions of the team's first year players. The following are the newcomers' contributions in Arizona State's 37-17 loss to USC.

On offense, redshirt freshman running back Loren Wade carried the ball 10 times for 26 yards, while scoring a one-yard touchdown in the third quarter on a crucial 4th and goal play. Redshirt freshman wide receiver Terry Richardson started the game, catching two balls for 49 yards. Redshirt freshman Andrew Carnahan started once again at left tackle, while redshirt freshman Jason Burke handled the long snapping duties. True freshman kicker Jesse Ainsworth hit one of his two field goal attempts, which went for 25 yards and also hit both of his extra points. Additional newcomers who saw playing time were JC transfer tight end Aaron Austin and redshirt freshman Jamal Lewis.

Defensively, JC transfer linebacker Justin Burks led the newcomers with seven tackles and one sack, which went for a four-yard loss. JC transfer cornerback Chris McKenzie had six total tackles, while redshirt freshman linebacker Jordan Hill had four total tackles, with a 1/2 tackle for loss. True freshman defensive end Kyle Caldwell had one stop for the day. On special teams, Loren Wade recorded a tackle, while Jesse Ainsworth and JC transfer defensive end Gabe Reininger both had fumble recoveries. Other defensive Sun Devils seeing Playing time were JC transfer defensive end Ishmael Thrower, who started the game, and redshirt freshman defensive tackle Ali Likio.
