Newcomer Report

Through out the 2003 season, DevilsDigest will track the contributions of the team's first year players. The following are the newcomers' contributions in Arizona State's 59-14 win over Oregon.

Offensively, redshirt freshman running back Loren Wade carried the ball nine times for a team high 77 yards, including a 56 yard touchdown run, the longest run in two years. True freshman quarterback Sam Keller went two for two for 22 yards, connecting on both passes to Terry Richardson. In addition to his two catches, the redshirt freshman wide receiver had two punt returns that gained five yards. Redshirt freshman Andrew Carnahan started at left tackle, while redshirt freshman Jason Burke handled the long snapping duties. True freshman kicker Jesse Ainsworth hit his only field goal attempt, which went for 43 yards, and also nailed all eight extra points. Additional newcomers who saw playing time were redshirt freshmen offensive linemen Stephen Berg and Zach Krula, and the tight end duo of JC transfer Aaron Austin and redshirt freshman Jamaal Lewis.

On defense, JC transfer linebacker Justin Burks led all newcomers with six tackles, while JC transfer Chris McKenzie had an early interception, which was returned for 23 yards. McKenzie also had one tackle, while redshirt freshman linebacker Jordan Hill accumulated three tackles. JC transfer defensive end Ishmael Thrower once again started and had two stops. Other defensive Sun Devils seeing playing time were redshirt freshman safety J.W. Lucas, true freshman defensive end Kyle Caldwell, true freshman linebacker Mark Washington, and JC transfer defensive tackle Gabe Reininger.
