Mahelona Enjoys ASU Visit, Gives Soft Verbal

Despite a serious injury earlier this month, many schools have been vying for the services of this Orange Coast Junior College defensive tackle. After this past weekend, it appears that the Sun Devils may just land this prize recruit. DevilsDigest talked to Mahelona earlier this evening.

The 6-2 295 Mahelona does call his commitment a soft verbal. "I basically committed, but not officially," said the defensive tackle. "I told the coach there's no good reason why I wouldn't be a Sun Devil. Somebody would have to steal me away. I feel like this is the right place for me, and I don't need to visit anywhere else. I told the coaches that I am gonna visit Hawaii sometime this month so I can go back home."

Many aspects of his visit impressed Mahelona. The big win over Oregon, was just the tip of the iceberg. "I loved the player-coach relationship," stated Mahelona. "They seem like close friends, and I liked that a lot. Awesome facilities. I liked the weight room and locker rooms. It's just a great school."

The Orange Coast standout is a December graduate. He told us that ASU offered at the end of his freshman season. Other schools that offered are: Oklahoma, Hawaii, Oregon, Oregon State, Washington, Washington State, and UCLA. Oklahoma was his first visit, but after the visit to Tempe he felt that "ASU was a good place for me."

Mahelona said that his broken leg could heal in time for him to play in the last few games of the season. However, he feels that it may be better to sit out this year. "I doubt I will play," he said. "I don't want to re-injure it before I transfer. I'm trying to get a medical hardship so I'll have three years to play three. If I don't get it, I'll have three years to play two."

The defensive tackle said that it still might be a while before he will make his verbal commitment a solid one. "I'm not sure when I'm gonna make the announcement. It's a big decision. I need to make sure what I really want, and make a good decision for myself. I'm sure my decision will be between Oklahoma and ASU. " And the maroon and gold faithful can only hope it's the later…
