Newcomer Report

Through out the 2003 season, DevilsDigest will track the contributions of the team's first year players. The following are the newcomers' contributions in Arizona State's 33-31 win over North Carolina.

On offense, redshirt freshman running back Loren Wade carried the ball 16 times for a team high and career high 130 yards. Redshirt freshman Andrew Carnahan started at left tackle, while redshirt freshman Jason Burke handled the long snapping duties. True freshman kicker Jesse Ainsworth hit two of his three field goal attempts, and hit one extra point and had one blocked. The two field goals he completed came from 21 and 24 yards out. Redshirt freshman tight end Jamaal Lewis had his first catch as a Sun Devil, gaining 21 yards. The only other Devil newcomer to see playing time on offense was Randy Hill.

Defensively, JC transfer linebacker Justin Burks led all newcomers with four tackles, including one for a one-yard loss. JC transfer cornerback Chris McKenzie had a total of two tackles, and forced a fumble. JC transfer defensive tackle Gabe Reininger had a total of two stops, while redshirt freshman linebacker Jordan Hill and JC transfer defensive end Ishmael Thrower both had a tackle apiece, while true freshman defensive end Kyle Caldwell had his first career sack as a Devil. Other Devils seeing playing time were redshirt freshman defensive tackle Ali Likio and redshirt freshman safety J.W. Lucas.
