Newcomer Report

Through out the 2003 season, DevilsDigest will track the contributions of the team's first year players. The following are the newcomers' contributions in Arizona State's 20-13 loss to UCLA.

Offensively, redshirt freshman running back Loren Wade carried the ball 19 times for a team high 113 yards, including a 61-yard touchdown. True freshman quarterback Sam Keller came in for an injured Andrew Walter, and passed for 79 yards off of 11 for 21 passing. Redshirt freshman tight end Jamaal Lewis had three catches, gaining a total of 31 yards. Redshirt freshman Andrew Carnahan started at left tackle, while redshirt freshman Jason Burke handled the long snapping duties. True freshman kicker Jesse Ainsworth hit two field goals from 27 and 33 yards out, and also nailed his only extra point attempt. Other Devil newcomers seeing playing time on offense were redshirt freshman running back Randy Hill and redshirt freshman wide receiver Terry Richardson.

On defense, JC transfer linebacker Justin Burks led the newcomers with 11 total tackles, with two of those going for a loss. True freshman defensive end Kyle Caldwell had his second sack as Devil, and also notched four tackles. JC transfer cornerback Chris McKenzie had three stops, while JC transfer defensive end Gabe Reininger had two, and JC transfer defensive end Ishmael Thrower added to his team high three and a half sacks. Other defensive Devils seeing playing time were redshirt freshman linebacker Jordan Hill, redshirt freshman safety J.W. Lucas, true freshman safety Daniel Varvel, and true freshman linebacker Mark Washington.
