Diogu Dominates Black-White Scrimmage

Prior to the football game on Saturday, several Sun Devil fans got a sneak peek of the 2003-04 basketball team.

Pre-season All-American Ike Diogu showed why he enters the upcoming season as one of the most heralded ASU players of all times. Nevertheless, the sophomore's scrimmage high 22 points and ten rebounds came in a losing effort as his black team fell to the white squad 61-48.

The winners supported four players in double digits, led by junior point guard Jason Braxton who scored 19 points. Many of the team's newcomers wowed those in attendance. Two of the faces that fans took special note of were wing player Steve Moore who had 15 points for the white team, and center Keith Wooden who collected 10 points for the winning black team.

"I was pretty impressed today," said head coach Rob Evans. "I thought we had some guys that got better this week – we had a great week in practice. Steve Moore really stood out, Keith Wooden stood out, Kevin Kruger…I've been pretty pleased with both ends of the court. We're getting better defensively, we're executing offensively. We have a long way to go, but we're getting better."

One returning player that has had a fine off-season is Braxton, and he certainly showed that in the scrimmage. The ASU skipper says that it's all a result of hard work. "Jason stayed here all summer, and worked on a lot of aspects of his game," exclaimed Evans." The later part of last year we changed the lineup and he had to come off the bench – he didn't want to do that anymore. He's a competitor. He's shooting the basketball better, he's running the team better, and certainly defensively he's been playing well."

With Serge Angounou's uncertain health status, there appeared to be a void at the small forward position. However, freshman Will Fameni is starting to stake his claim to that role, and a possible starting job. "He does remind me a lot of Serge," said the ASU coach. "We recruited Serge at that position, because we knew that position was one we were lacking in. But we're a very versatile basketball team. We can go smaller, we can go bigger. I think the biggest thing is that we have guys that can score when we're open, and guys with athletic ability that can defend. If they double Ike, we'll make them pay."

JC transfer Steve Moore may have been one of the better offensive players on the floor during this session, but his defense is equally impressive. Coach Evans stated that he's just impressed with the whole package. "He's been well coached in high school and junior college," said Evans. "Fundamentally, he's much further along than a lot of JUCO players I've had. He's really a nice player, He's a tough kid, and understands the game of basketball."
