Newcomer Report

Through out the 2003 season, DevilsDigest will track the contributions of the team's first year players. The following are the newcomers' contributions in Arizona State's 51-23 loss to California.

On offense, redshirt freshman running back Loren Wade pulled out his third straight 100 yard rushing game with a 107-yard performance off of 22 carries, including a 31-yard touchdown. True freshman quarterback Sam Keller went six for 10 passing, gaining 83 yards with one touchdown pass, connecting with redshirt freshman tight end Jamaal Lewis – the first Sun Devil career touchdown for both. Overall, Lewis had two catches for 16 yards. Redshirt freshman Terry Richardson had a total of three catches for 42 yards and redshirt freshman running back Randy Hill carried the ball one time for a four-yard gain. Redshirt freshman Andrew Carnahan started at left tackle, while redshirt freshman Jason Burke handled the long snapping duties. Other Devil newcomers seeing playing time on offense were redshirt freshman offensive linemen Stephen Berg and Zach Krula.

Defensively, JC linebacker Justin Burks led all newcomers with five tackles, while JC transfer defensive end Ishmael Thrower had a total of three tackles, with one going for a loss. JC transfer cornerback Chris McKenzie came up with three stops, and redshirt freshmen defensive tackles Ali Likio and safety J.W. Lucas came up with two tackles apiece. True freshman linebacker Mark Washington, redshirt freshman linebacker Jordan Hill, JC transfer defensive tackle, and true freshman defensive end Kyle Caldwell all had one tackle each. The only other Devil newcomer to see playing time on this side of the ball was true freshman safety Daniel Varvel.
