Newcomer Report

Through out the 2003 season, DevilsDigest will track the contributions of the team's first year players. The following are the newcomers' contributions in Arizona State's 38-27 loss to Stanford.

Offensively, the running back duo of redshirt freshmen Loren Wade and Randy Hill split the time in the backfield. Wade rushed 12 times for 55 yards, including a fumble, while Hill had 10 carries for 49 yards and a four-yard reception. Redshirt freshman Andrew Carnahan started at left tackle, while redshirt freshman Jason Burke handled the long snapping duties. True freshman kicker Jesse Ainsworth nailed all three of his extra point attempts and redshirt freshman tight end Jamaal Lewis had one catch for an 11-yard gain. The only other Devil newcomer to see playing time on offense was redshirt freshman wide receiver Terry Richardson.

On defense, JC linebacker Justin Burks led all newcomers with six tackles, two going for a loss. JC transfer defensive end Ishmael Thrower had a total of five stops, as did true freshman linebacker Mark Washington, who also recorded his first sack as a Devil. True freshman defensive end Kyle Caldwell accumulated four tackles, JC transfer Chris McKenzie had two, and redshirt freshman linebacker Jordan Hill had one. Other defensive Devil newcomers seeing playing time were redshirt freshmen safety J.W. Lucas and defensive tackle Ali Likio, and JC transfer defensive lineman Gabe Reininger.
