Newcomer Report

Through out the 2003 season, DevilsDigest will track the contributions of the team's first year players. The following are the newcomers' contributions in Arizona State's 34-19 loss to Washington State.

Running back Randy Hill filled in for another newcomer, Loren Wade, at the starting running back position. Prior to his first quarter injury, Hill had eight yards on two carries. Kicker Jesse Ainsworth made both of his field goal attempts, including a career best in the maroon and gold – a 47 yarder. He also made one of two extra points. Andrew Cranahan started at left tackle, while Jason Burke handled the long snapping duties. Tight end Jamaal Lewis was the other newcomer that saw playing time on Saturday.

Linebacker Justin Burks led all newcomers with five tackles, including one sack. Fellow linebacker Jordan Hill had four stops, while defensive end Ishmael Thrower, and cornerback Chris McKenzie had three tackles each. McKenzie had the lone Sun Devil interception in the game. Defensive tackle Ali Likio and Defensive end Kyle Caldwell each had a pair of tackles. Linebacker Mark Washington and defensive tackle Gabe Reininger had one stop each. Safety J.W. Lucas was another newcomer that participated on defense.
