Four Star Wide Receiver Set to Visit Tempe

Up until the last few weeks, Culver City High School standout Michael Bumpus was not listing the Sun Devils among the places he would like to visit. In this DevilsDigest interview, the blue chip wideout told us why he would trip to Tempe this weekend.

"My friend Rocky Hinds and I talked about possibly playing together in college," said Bumpus. "He told me that he was going to visit Arizona State. So I thought I should go visit with him. Maybe that will give us a chance to play on the same team." Does he consider himself and Hinds as a package deal? "It could be, but I don't think it's definite."

As one of the top wide receivers on the West Coast, Bumpus is obviously drawn to the high-octane offense employed by the Sun Devils. "I like it that they throw it down the field," he said. "Talking to the coaches, they don't mind throwing the ball deep on first down. I like that." Bumpus is a two-time All-State underclass selection. In his junior year he caught 75 passes for 1,081 yards and 11 touchdowns.

This season, Bumpus is his team's quarterback in an option-oriented offense. During the regular season he accumulated 800 yards rushing, and ten rushing touchdowns. He did play some at receiver, as well as cornerback. Currently, Culver City High isn't playing as they have lost in the second round of playoffs.

When it comes to recruiting visits, the receiver is taking his time scheduling his trips. Nevertheless, he does intend to take the full allotment of allowed visits. "I only visited Washington State." Stated Bumpus. "They are in my top five. I just want to go on all my trips and see what the schools have to offer…I don't have definite dates, but I know that in January I will visit Washington, USC and LSU. I don't think I'll make a decision before next month."

When choosing a school, Bumpus told us that he would evaluate the following factors "I look at playing time," he said. "How their business or communication programs are, graduation rate, and just the general feel I get around the coaches and players."

Bumpus stated that he did get a qualifying score on his college entrance exam, and is now working on getting his GPA up to par. He added that the Sun Devils have scheduled an in home visit with him next week.
