Mississippi Safety Gets Ready to Visit ASU

Another big recruiting week for the Sun Devils must mean another prospect from the deep south visiting Tempe. This time, it is Steve Gandy – one of the best players in the state of Mississippi. DevilsDigest caught up with the safety before he embarks on his trip.

The Wayne County high school (Waynesboro, MS) standout said that the Devils have been recruiting him since September. "I enjoy talking to the coaches," exclaimed Gandy. "It's a good school, and the Pac-10 is a good conference."

Gandy listed Tennessee, Alabama, Auburn, and Ole Miss, as his top five schools along with ASU. Odd as it may be, the trip to Tempe will mark his first official visit. "Those are the schools I have it narrowed down to," he said. "I plan on taking all my five visits."

At 6-1 187 Gandy is an undersized linebacker for his team. Nevertheless, it has been reported that as of two weeks ago he had somewhere in the vicinity of 140 tackles and 11 sacks. Arizona State and Ole Miss are recruiting him at safety, while the other schools are pegging him at linebacker.

"I don't care what position I play in College," exclaimed Gandy. "It doesn't matter if I play away from home or not. I'll go to wherever I can play at. It's not an issue for me."

When we asked him to self-asses his skills, he replied: "I'm quick, a good hitter, and I have good awareness. I don't have too many weaknesses, but other people may not think so. I guess I could get bigger." Gandy was clocked running a 4.4.

As far as the factors that will determine his decision on where to play, he listed two main ones: "How will I fit in wit the players, and will I get to play." The safety added that he is fully qualified academically.
