It's Miller Time For the Sun Devils

Every ASU fan around would tell you how essential tight end Zach Miller was to the 2004 recruiting class. As of 8:15, Wednesday morning, the Sun Devil nation took a huge collective breath. Miller is a unanimous five star recruit, the #1 player at his position and a player every major powerhouse hoped would join their team. His selection of ASU is a huge boost to an already promising recruiting class.

Taking nothing away from how much he means to the program, but one player does not define a recruiting class. Thus, now that it is Miller Time, what's next for the Sun Devil team and what is the predicted fall-out from Miller's decision?

The state of Arizona managed to produce two premiere tight ends this year. Andrew Pettes of Moon Valley is a top 30 player and should be making his decision known within the next day or two. He is down to Oregon and ASU. Many are speculating he will go to Oregon in light of Miller's decision. Pettes is a physical specimen who is not done growing and could fill a need as an athlete at ASU, specifically on the defensive line. Will his hometown ties keep him at ASU, or does the commitment of Miller push him to Oregon? His answer should come by the end of Thursday.

Allen Smith- any other year he would be the state's top player. The offensive lineman has plans to announce his decision on signing day with Tom Lemming. Can Devil fans hold out that long for another national recruit? Smith is an intelligent young man who is taking the whole recruiting process in stride. He has Notre Dame, Stanford, Arizona State, UCLA and Tennessee in his top five. Smith is no stranger to the Devils program as he lives less than 10 miles south of the ASU campus. Still, he felt as though he didn't get enough on his official visit and is taking an unofficial to ASU today (Jan. 21st) Smith is also tight with current Sun Devil Mike Pollak who played with him in the trenches at Tempe's Corona Del Sol. There are many strong ties to the ASU program, including Smith's mother who's an ASU professor. This race is too close to call at this point, but Miller joining ASU can only help the efforts here.

B.J. Dennard is the last of the major Arizona products ASU is seriously considering. Dennard is the jelly to Brophy's peanut butter & jelly sandwich, which ASU commit Uriah Marshall completes. Dennard is an ASU legacy, best friends with Marshall, and would be a nice athlete for ASU to use at multiple positions if he committed to the Sun Devils. He is currently torn between ASU and the UofA. Now that Miller is on board, you have to wonder if Dennard will want to join the rest of the premier Valley of the Sun players and stay home. Keeping him at ASU would also mean a clean sweep of the top in-state players and force new UofA head coach Mike Stoops to wait until next year before attempting to get a top local player.

Finally, the fall-out from the Miller commit also impacts the Miller family and the current Sun Devil Tight Ends. There has been a lot of speculation that Zach's older brother Brent could now move to the defensive line and where he could fill an area of need. Zach said many times during his recruiting that he didn't want to take away snaps from his brother. Brent missed all of last year with a knee injury, and will be a player to watch closely in spring and fall practices.

In addition to Brent, the Sun Devils have promising young tight end Jamaal Lewis who improved dramatically as the season wore on. ASU also have devastating blocker Lee Burghgraef as a two-year returning starter. Rounding up the depth chart is Aaron Austin, a player who was supposed to be a lock to star in the NFL. Nevertheless, by the end of the year he barely saw any playing time.

There are many questions left to be answered in the next two weeks in regards to the Sun Devils' recruiting. How will the defensive line be filled out? Where will Allen Smith sign? After all the dust settles on the letters of intent, we'll still be asking how the tight end position, along with several more in the team, will play out.
