Devils Out Slug Zags

The 16th ranked ASU baseball team faced the Gonzaga Bulldogs on Monday night at Packard Stadium, and improved their season record to 6-1 after the 10-7 win.

Making his first start of the year, Erik Averill did not have as solid of an outing as he has had in his previous appearances out of the bullpen. Averill gave up seven runs, five earned in two innings pitched. Relief pitcher Pat Bresnehan (2-0) lasted five innings, not giving up a run, while earning the win. Zechry Zinicola came in to pitch the eighth and ninth innings, earned the save, while not giving up a run.

ASU wasted no time in taking a quick lead in the first inning after putting seven runs on the board. After consecutive singles to start the inning by Dustin Pedroia and Travis Buck, Joel Bocchi reached on an infield hit. A bases loaded walk by Frank Mesa allowed Pedroia to score. Tuffy Gosewisch came through with a double to right field that scored Buck and Bocchi. Later in the inning, Pedroia doubled to right field, scoring Joe Persichina and Colin Curtis to cap the seven run first inning.

Gonzaga added four runs in the second inning and tied the game in the third inning with three runs. To lead off the fourth inning, Pedroia hit his second double of the game and would later score after a throwing error when he was stealing third base. ASU added another run in the fifth and eighth innings for the 10-7 win.

Pedroia went four with five with three doubles and two RBI's, numbers six, seven, and eight on the year. Gosewisch (two for four, two RBI's) and Persichina (two for four) were the other two Devils to record a multi-hit game.

ASU travels to Houston this weekend to participate in the Coca-Cola Classic. ASU will face Lamar (4-2) on Friday, Memphis (0-0) on Saturday, and #1 ranked Rice (2-1) on Sunday.
