Waves Trash Devils in NCAA Regional

The #1 seed ASU baseball team faced off against the fourth seeded Pepperdine Waves in the opening game of the Fullerton Regional on Friday. The Devils and the Waves were tied at three before the Waves exploded for 12 runs in the last three innings for the 15-5 win sending the Devils to the losers bracket. They will face the loser of the Cal State Fullerton/ Minnesota game Saturday at 11AM PT.

Jeff Mousser took the start for the Devils. He gave up three runs in four and one third innings pitched. Erik Averill (4-3) was strapped with the loss after allowing four runs to cross the plate off of five hits in two innings of work. Zechry Zinicola, Ty Marotz, and Josh Blake combined to pitch the last two and two thirds innings, giving up eight runs total.

Pepperdine took the quick 1-0 lead in the first inning, but the Devils tied the game up in their half of the inning after a Tuffy Gosewisch single scored Travis Buck. In the second inning, Nick Cadena and Nick Walsh crossed the plate for the 3-1 ASU lead.

Pepperdine tied the game in the fourth inning, and took the lead for good after a five run inning in the seventh inning. ASU added single tallies in the seventh and eighth innings, but that was not enough as Pepperdine added another three runs in the eighth inning and four more in the ninth for the 15-5 win.

The Sun Devils were able to pound out 14 hits, but also committed four errors on the afternoon. Travis Buck led the Devils offensively, as he went 4-5 with two RBI's and two runs scored.

The loss drops the Devils record to 40-17 on the year. The 10-run defeat is the worst in post-season history for ASU. The Devils will need to win four straight games in the next two days if they wish to advance to the Super Regional.
