ASU Recruiting Report For The Weekend of 12/14

ASU coaches called this weekend a crucial one, and the plethora of recruits visiting Tempe affirmed that notion. Safety Andre Bailey and JC Quarterback from Palomar Community College Andy Goodenough committed to the Sun Devils during their trip. Here's what Bailey, and other recruits had to say about their visit.

It's no secret that some recruits embrace the recruiting process, and try to milk as many visits as they can before committing. Local McClintock high school star Andre Bailey doesn't belong to that group. "I knew I wanted to go there (ASU) from the start, so there wasn't any reason for me to take other visits. I wanted to tell the coaches in person during my visit. They thought I was going to think about it and call them on Monday. There were kinda speechless when I announced my commitment during my visit (smile)." Bailey added that he was recruited as a safety, and he would prefer to play the left/right safety (i.e. the position Daniel and Al Williams played), because "That's where you get more action."

Bailey's high school teammate, running back Randy Hill, has named ASU his leader, but is far from committing. "The visit was real good. I'm familiar with ASU, but I saw new things because this visit was different than an unofficial one. I got a real good feel for the campus." Hill will visit Washington on 1/4, and Colorado State on 1/11.

Another local coveted ASU recruit is Mike Nixon from Sunnyslope HS. "I had a great time," said the quarterback. "My family has season tickets for ASU, so some of the stuff I've seen before." Nixon enjoyed his host Shaun McDonald, and didn't forget to mention that McDonald was first team All Pac-10. "He may make a lot of noise on the field, but he's pretty quiet off the field." Nixon is recruited at other positions than quarterback, depending on the school. But says: "The position the school recruits me doesn't matter. There will be a lot more factors going into my decision." Other visits he'll take are Washington 1/4, UCLA 1/11, and Stanford 1/18. Nixon's visit to Notre Dame on 1/25 is up in the air due to the coaching situation there.

Local Saguaro HS player, Loren Howard, could shore up a shaky defensive line for the Devils. He already has his brother Phil playing for the Sun Devils. Will this be enough to sway this heralded recruit to wear the maroon and gold in 2002? "I can't say that ASU is my leader right now" said Howard. He said that his visit to ASU was just as good as his visit to Northwestern the previous week. Looming on the horizon are visits to Washington, Stanford, and possibly Notre Dame.

There were some out of state recruits as well on the ASU campus. Tyler Krieg, a two-way lineman from Oregon, had a "Real good visit. The Coaches are young, and fun to hang around. I liked the campus, and obviously the weather. The weight room is awesome!" Krieg did mention that ASU is leader. He has a visit to Duke on 1/11, and a possible visit to Cal, which is up in the air due to the coaching situation there.

On a side note, D'Andre Johnson and Robert James, who already committed to the Devils, were present on this visit.
