ASU Gets Back On The Winning Track

Feeling lowly about your first two Pac-10 games? Hosting your holiday tournament may be what the doctor ordered. The Sun Devils (6-4) took its frustrations over the Canisius Golden Griffins, in the first round of the holiday classic. ASU will meet Northwestern, who edged Louisiana Lafayette 52-51, in the championship game on Saturday night at 8 P.M.

It was a seesaw battle between both teams. ASU wasn't able to shake off the visitors for the first ten minutes. The next ten minutes saw the Devils dominating inside, and forcing numerous turnovers, which led to a 41-28 halftime lead. The home team kept applying pressure in the second half going on a 16-6 run and increasing its lead to 57-34 with 11:38 to go. Sloppy play on offense, and silly fouls never allowed ASU to further increase its lead. At the 7:01 mark the Sun Devils were ahead 66-46. Even the seldom-used Brandon Goldman got to see some action, among with the rest of the ASU bench players, en route to a 77-54 victory.

Chad Prewitt led the Sun Devils with 14 points, and Tommie Smith chipped in with 12 of his own. Shooting 59.6% from the field, and 54.5% from three-point land, were key in ASU's offensive dominance tonight. Granted the visitors from Buffalo, NY will never be confused with an offensive powerhouse, but limiting the Golden Griffins to 38.5% was a stellar defensive effort by the Devils. If ASU can duplicate those numbers against Northwestern, they should win their holiday tournament and instill much needed confidence in the team.
