Devils Close Out Exhibition Season with 73-58 Win

The game versus EA Sports All-Stars featured some new looks on the court. Namely, it was an experiment that saw the three-point line move nine inches further away from the current stripe, as well as a widened three-second lane. During the game there was however one aspect that unfortunately looked all too familiar - the Sun Devils' struggles with an opponent's zone defense.

"We asked them (EA Sports) to come out and play us zone late in the ball game," said ASU coach Rob Evans. "We haven't worked much against zone, because we've putting a lot of stuff in. We'll work a lot more on that the rest of this week. It's good that we got a chance to see the things we need to see."

Three pointers by Bryson Krueger and Ike Diogu helped ASU break away from a deadlock game and jump to a 20-14 lead at the 11:20 mark of the first half. A three point baskets and three point play by Kevin Kruger helped the maroon and gold go on a 24-10 run that ended with a Diogu dunk at the buzzer, which gave the Devils a 44-24 lead at the half. An 18-8 run in the first ten minutes of the second half ends with a Tyrone Jackson three pointer which gave the home team a 62:36 margin at the 11:18 mark of the second half. EA Sports turned on the zone and cooled off the Devils who scored only 11 points from here on until the final buzzer.

Diogu was the only ASU player in double figures with 25 points. The junior also had a game-high eight boards and six blocks. Steve Moore and Kevin Kruger had nine points each. The Devils shot 37% in the second half (46.6% overall), and was out rebounded 38-27. They did however force EA Sports into 21 turnovers.

"It was a good ball game to play," Evans commented. Our guys came out with a sense of urgency, especially in the first half. We took them out from what they wanted to do. They had seven baskets in the first half. In the second half they hit a couple of baskets, but we re-grouped and got it out to 30. We had some breakdowns with some combinations that I probably won't play during the season."

ASU starts the regular season at home when they play Jackson State at 2 P.M. at Wells Fargo Arena.
