Most of the damage in the later stages of the second half came from the Miners' Filberto Rivera who converted three baskets beyond the arc, to score 9 of his 13 points. The Sun Devils' Tyrone Jackson could have been the hero of the game, but as time expired his lay-up rimmed out along with his team's hopes.
Steve Moore led ASU with 16 points. Ike Diogu had 15, but scored only four in the second half as he was riddled with four fouls, which caused him to play a season-low 25 minutes. Juco transfer Bryson Kruger had his best game in the maroon and gold scoring four three pointers, all the first half, to finish with 12. Omar Thomas led UTEP, as well as all players, with 26 points and 11 rebounds.
ASU will face Vanderbilt, who lost to Southern Illinois earlier today, Saturday evening for the third-place game of the Las Vegas Invitational.
