Arizona State Visits the Powers Family

Will Powers is one of the highest rated players that ASU has a shot at this recruiting season. He will visit Tempe next weekend. Coaches Koetter and Monachino made an in-home visit with the Powers family on Thursday evening. We get the full recap.

"We met with the coaches and just asked them about a lot of general stuff," explained Powers. "They know our focus is on academics so we spoke a lot about that. We did not ask too many questions about the football program. They told us some more about the social aspects of ASU."

The four star defensive end is thinking of majoring in Business and has been pleasantly surprised to find out what ASU has to offer. "A lot of people had told me that the academics there are not the best, but after looking into it more and speaking with the coaches, they seem to have a lot going for them in that area."

Powers will find out firsthand what the program has going for it when he visits next weekend. "I am really looking forward to that trip."

The Devils will be competing with Cal, Stanford, and Oregon for his services. "I do not have a favorite. For me to say that I like one school over another at this point would not be right. Especially since so much of it has to do with which school made the last impression on you. By that I mean which school you visited with last or spoke with last. All of these schools have a lot of ups and down to them. I will figure out who I like best after I take all of my visits."

His visits will be to Cal December 17th, and he also has tentative dates set with Stanford (Jan.7th) and Oregon (Jan.14th). He is not positive if his visit to Palo Alto will be taken then for good reason. "It matters what goes on with the coaching situation. If they have a coach in place by then I will visit at that time. If they don't have one yet I will have to wait, but my guess is they will."

The four star has heard the rumors that Norm Chow could be the next coach for the Cardinal and he is happy with that. "Stanford is the only school recruiting me as an outside linebacker so my guess is if Chow came in he wouldn't change the defense too much because he is an offensive guy. Plus, their defense was pretty good this year so I am not sure if they would go away from the 3-4 scheme. From what I know of Chow, his whole adult career has been in football. On hearsay alone, he seems to be a guy that can get the job done and is well informed as a coach."

One school that is now absent from Powers' list is Nebraska. "The last time I spoke with the Nebraska coach he said that they had one spot left at my position and he thought it might be filled soon. Then the visit dates we were trying to get scheduled weren't working well for either of us. At that time we thought it was best that we part ways."

As far as his parents go, Powers' father seems to be open to all of the schools on his list and his mother is beginning to come around. "At first, when it was a lot of schools we were looking at, she always came back to Stanford. But now that we have really started to focus on a handful of schools, she has learned more about them and she is not advocating Stanford as much. She is more open to all of them now."

Serra finished the year with an overtime playoffs loss to Aragon. Powers was unsure at the time of his final stats for his senior season, but believes he had seven sacks.
