Hawaii Lineman Favors Sun Devils

Raphael Ieru, a 6-4 315 offensive lineman from McKinley high school in Honolulu, talked to DevilsDigest.com following his visit to Tempe.

"It was great. Everything about the visit was great," said Raphael Ieru. "The people, the environment, the facilities, everything was real nice. Arizona State was my first visit and it was a good one (smile)." Ieru added that he enjoyed both of his host players on the trip Mike Pollak and Jason Burke.

Up until recently, the lineman was considering San Diego State and Hawaii. However, he told us that he has eliminated the Aztecs, so his choice will be between the Sun Devils and the hometown Warriors, which he will visit on January 21st. "I didn't commit and I still have my choices. But ASU seems like a good choice for me. I'm not taking any trips after UH."

There has been some speculation that Ieru may have academic issues that may make it hard for him to qualify. However, he claimed that he's in good shape in this area. "I'm taking the SAT this week, but I have a GPA of 3.3 so I don't have to score that high to qualify. But I really want to get a high score (smile)."

Ieru said that he was offered a scholarship by the Sun Devils on his visit, but added that he doesn't feel pressure by ASU to make a decision in a hurry. Due to the fact that he will be deciding between a school in his back yard and a college on the mainland, the inevitable question arises as to how does he feel about possibly not playing college football in front of his family and friends. "I like being away from home, " he said. "It's something new. It wouldn't bother me at all to go to school away from home."

The lineman plans to make his decision following an in-home visit by ASU's coach Koetter on January 27th.
