Pimentel Settles on Sun Devils

Linebacker Mickey Pimentel was a fairly solid commit to Cal. That is until he visited Tempe a month and a half ago, which caused him to have some doubts concerning his original decision. After heavy pondering for weeks, and holding several talks with coaches from both schools, the Pima community college linebacker pulled the trigger in favor of Arizona State on Saturday. Devils Digest talked the Pimentel just hours after his commitment.

Mickey Pimentel, a four-star recruit, is being recruited at the Devil position, which is a linebacker playing as a quasi safety. "It's exciting to play a position that players such as Adam Archuleta and Pat Tillman played," he said. "ASU is known to place great linebackers and safeties in the NFL and my goal is to get there."

Speaking of placing players in the pros, the hire of new Sun Devil defensive coordinator, Bill Miller, who has coached NFL stars such as Ray Lewis, Julian Peterson, Kenny Holmes, Jason Gildon and others while still in college, made the proposition of playing for the maroon and gold that much more attractive. "Coach Miller made a great impression on me," said the linebacker. "The fact that he coached my idol, Ray Lewis, means a lot. I know he can help guide me to my goals."

Some of Pimentel's mentors reside in Phoenix, and those individuals, along with his family, have influenced him greatly in his decision. Furthermore, his family will now actually relocate due to Pimentel's verbal. "My whole family is gonna move to Phoenix " he commented. "I know that's a great place for them to live, and that makes me happy to know they'll be close by."

Pimentel knows that the recruiting process isn't quite over, and that the Cal coaching staff will continue to pitch their program as long as they can. Does he anticipate having a change of heart again? "To me my commitment to ASU is solid," he said. "Unless a miracle happens I'll be playing for ASU."
