Devils Edge Bulldogs

The Arizona State Sun Devils hold on to beat the Gonzaga Bulldogs 10-8 Saturday afternoon in the second game of the Bob Schaefer Memorial Tournament. The Bulldogs (1-1) made it a game late by scoring five runs in the last two innings to cut a seven run deficit to just two runs. The freshman trio of Vinny Biancamano, Andrew Romine, and J.J. Sferra led the Devils. The three combined for eight hits, five RBI, and five runs scored.

The Devils (3-2) jumped out in front early by scoring three runs in the bottom of the second inning off Bulldog starter Jay Byner (0-1). Freshman second basemen and former Cactus High School star, Vinny Biancamano put the Devils up 1-0 after recording his first career hit as a Sun Devil by driving a double in the gap to score sophomore designated hitter Zechry Zinicola. Freshman shortstop Andrew Romine followed up with a double of his own to knock in Biancamano. Sophomore left fielder Colin Curtis capped of the three run inning by driving in Romine with a single through the right side of the infield. The Bulldogs came right back and scored one in the top of the third and two more in the fourth off senior starter Jason Urquidez to tie the game 3-3. Urquidez (1-0) picked up his first win of the season, allowing five runs (four earned runs), on six hits, in seven innings pitched. Urquidez was able to settle down a bit and the Devils were able to build a 10-3 lead thanks to the hot hitting of the three freshman.

Biancamano finished the day 3-for-3 with three runs scored, and two RBI. Romine added a three hit two RBI performance of his own, going 3-for-4 with one run scored. Freshman centerfielder J.J. Sferra went 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored. Other notables were leadoff man Colin Curtis and senior catcher Tuffy Gosewisch. Curtis finished the day with two hits and three RBI to go along with two stolen bases. Gosewisch continued his hot bat at the plate by going 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Junior right-handed pitcher Tony Barnette struggled out of the bullpen allowing three runs on four hits in one inning of work. This helped the Bulldogs close the gap going in the top of the ninth before closer Zechry Zinicola was called upon to finish the game. Zinicola picked up his first save of the season in one inning of work.

The Devils next opponent of the tournament will be the Oregon State Beavers tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 p.m. Senior left-hander Brett Bordes (0-1 0.00 ERA) will take the mound for the Devils who are now 2-0 in the tournament.
