Tulane Topples ASU

The No. 11 Arizona State Sun Devils dropped their third game in a row and second to the No. 1 Tulane Green Wave, 7-2 Saturday afternoon in Louisiana.

The Devils (6-7) took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the third after senior catcher Tuffy Gosewisch drove a two-run single through the infield. The Green Wave (6-0) came right back in the bottom of the inning to score two runs of their own off Sun Devil starter Erik Averill. The game remained tied at two until the bottom of the sixth when the Green Wave exploded for five runs to take a 7-2 lead. Averill was credited with his second loss of the season after allowing five runs in five innings of work.

Pre-season All American and Georgia Tech transfer Micah Owings picked up the win for the Green Wave. Owings gave up just two runs in his eight innings of work. The only Devil to record more than one hit was Gosewisch, who finished the day 3-for-4 including the two RBI in the second inning. Gosewisch also extended his hitting streak to a career-high 11 games. Freshman right-handed pitcher Seth Garrison looked good coming out of the bullpen for the Devils, striking out two Tulane batters in his only inning of work.

The Devils will try to avoid the sweep tomorrow as they finish the three game series with a 1 p.m. match-up against Tulane left-hander J.R. Crowell (1-0, 4.50 ERA).
