Green Wave Washes Away Devils

The Arizona State Sun Devil baseball team suffered its first series sweep since 2002 (at Florida State) after losing Sunday afternoon to the No. 1 Tulane Green Wave, 9-3. The Devils were outscored by a combined17 runs (24 to 7) in the three game series. The loss was the Devils fifth in a row and dropped them two games below .500 at 6-8.

The Green Wave (7-0) jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the bottom of the third after a grand slam homerun by Tulane right fielder Matt Barket. The grand slam came off Sun Devil starter Pat Bresnehan (0-1, 4.20 ERA), who suffered his first loss of the season. Bresnehan lasted just three innings in which he gave up five runs on four hits and two walks. Tulane starter J.R. Crowel picked up his second victory of the season after allowing three runs in five innings pitched. The Green Wave bullpen allowed just three hits and no runs over the final four innings to preserve the lead.

Senior first baseman Jeff Larish was the only Devil to record a multi hit game going 2-for-4. Sun Devil freshman infielder and Desert Mountain H.S. product Willy Fox, hit his first career collegiate homerun with a two-run shot in the fifth inning that cut the Tulane lead in half at 6-3. Fox finished the day 1-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored. Redshirt freshman right fielder Rock Laguna was the other Devil to drive in a run with a double in the fifth that helped the Devils get on the scoreboard. Laguna finished the day 1-for-3. Senior catcher Tuffy Gosewisch had his 11 game hitting streak snapped after his 0-for-4 performance at the plate.

The Devils next game will be this Wednesday with another non-conference match-up with rival University of Arizona in Tucson at 4 p.m. Their next home series will start this Friday against nationally ranked Baylor at 6:30 p.m.
