The Devils (7-9) jumped out in front 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth after a sacrifice fly by senior catcher Tuffy Gosewisch that scored right fielder Travis Buck. The Bears (5-3) came right back in the fifth to tie the game at 1-1 which is where the score stood until the top of the seventh when the Bears were able to manufacture two more runs to take a 3-1 lead. The Devils answered right back in the bottom of the inning with a two out rally that was sparked by a Baylor throwing error. The error, which allowed the Devils to continue the inning, came off a routine groundball hit by freshman shortstop Andrew Romine. Fellow freshman J.J. Sferra then singled to advance Romine to second and redshirt freshman Rocky Laguna drew a walk to load the bases with two outs. Pre-season All American Travis Buck then stepped up to the plate and delivered with a grand slam homerun over the right field fence to give the Devils the 5-3 advantage. Buck, who had been struggling as of late, finished the day 2-for-4 with two runs scored including the four RBI. Sferra and Gosewisch were the only other Devils to record a hit in the game as the Devils managed just five hits off the Bears pitching. Sferra went 2-for-3 with one run scored and Gosewisch was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Gosewisch did have to leave the game early after being struck with a pitch in the back of the head in the eighth.
Sophomore pitcher Zechry Zinicola looked great on the mound for the Devils striking out a career-high six batters in the start. Zinicola ended up pitching six solid innings for the Devils while only allowing three runs in the no-decision. Senior right-hander Jason Urquidez picked up the win for the Devils after pitching three scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Urquidez who improved his record to 2-1 was dominant on the mound allowing just one hit while striking out four.
The three game series continues tomorrow, as the Devils will put sophomore right-hander Pat Bresnehan (0-1, 4.50 ERA) on the mound against Bear starter Cory VanAllen (2-0, 0.68 ERA). The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start time at Packard Stadium in Tempe.
