Devils Use Early Lead to Route Pirates

A five-run first inning set the tone on a chilly Saturday night in Greenville, N.C. as ASU won its second game of the Keith LeClair Classic over East Carolina in convincing fashion 10-3, and evened its record at 10-10.

Catcher Tuffy Gosewisch sported a hot bat on Saturday. His two-run home run in the third padded the lead, and Jeff Larish's three-run home, and his team- high fifth overall turned out to be the last scoring ASU would have.

On the mound, pitcher Erik Averill gave up three runs in 6 1/3 innings that put his record at 3-2 in 2005. He struck out three batters, but issued four walks. Tony Barnette saw extensive closing duties, pitching 2 2/3 shutout innings.

The Sun Devils will conclude their tournament play on Sunday at 8 a.m. MT against Ohio State. Right-handed pitcher Pat Bresnehan (0-1, 4.05 ERA) is slated to get the nod in that contest.
