Devils Blank Buckeyes

The Sun Devil baseball team continued their great play in this weekend's LeClair Classic with a 3-0-shutout victory over Ohio State Sunday afternoon. The Devils won their third straight game and improved their overall record to 11-10 on the season.

Sun Devil pitchers Pat Bresnehan and Brett Bordes looked great on the mound, as they combined for the six-hit shutout while striking out eight Buckeye batters. Bresnehan earned his first victory on the year to improve his record to 1-1 on the year. Bresnehan pitched six shutout innings while allowing just five hits and striking out four. Bordes was just as good coming out of the bullpen to pitch three scoreless innings in picking up his first save of the season. Bordes also had four strikeouts and gave up just one hit in relief.

The Devils jumped out in front in the bottom of the fifth inning after a two-out bunt single by junior preseason All-American Travis Buck. Buck finished the game 2-for-4 with one RBI. The Devils then added a couple of insurance runs in the eighth after a two-run single off the bat of freshman designated hitter Willy Fox. Tuffy Gosewisch continued to hit the ball well today. Gosewisch finished the day 2-for-2 with on run scored including two walks. The Devils really came through in the clutch throughout the tournament, scoring 13 of their 17 runs with two outs in the inning. This was an area the Devils had struggled with earlier in the year.

The Devils will travel to Baton Rouge, La. Next weekend to play two games each against the No. 2 LSU Tigers and Western Illinois Leathernecks.
