Koetter's Komments

Here's what ASU Head Coach Dirk Koetter had to say on each of the players who were part of the 2002 class of recruits:

Louis Areyan – "Same school as Delvon (Flowers). Came very highly recommended by his coaches…We liked his athleticism."

Aaron Austin – "The #1 tight end in the country. This guy is the real thing. Tremendous run blocker, great receiver. He can split the two-deep (zone defense). He could have gone anywhere in the country. We are so fortunate to have him."

Andre Bailey – "We think he has a huge upside. He's one of the best athletes in the valley. I think that anyone that has seen him play Basketball ca attest to that. He's untapped."

Stephen Berg – "Easily the best player in Tucson this year. Had his choice of a lot of different schools. Has a chance to play early, because of how physical he is."

Jake Bingham – "Same thing (Like Berg). Could have gone to a lot of different schools. It came down to us and Nebraska, and went back and forth for the last few weeks. Very fortunate to have him."

Kellen Bradley – "A kid that we've known about all along. HE committed to Oregon State early. He was always on the sidelines to every of our home games. Along with coach Helfrich, we had a feeling in the back of our minds that something will work out down the road. We like Kellen a lot, and he has a great future."

Andrew Carnahan – "He's a kid that changed over to us last night (Tuesday). He was committed to Texas Tech since last December. Jeff (Grimes) stayed on him forever. We really like the potential of this kid. He'll be a 300-pounde in a blink of an eye."

Mike Davis – "Ron (English) went on a mission to find a big corner. He's a kid from being under recruited to everyone wanting him. Once he announced that he's going to commit somewhere, everyone wanted him. It was a fight to the finish, if you only knew …"

Tim Fa'aita – "Played at a great program at San Francisco City College. He's a guy that we look to give us immediate help on the offensive line. He's a guard."

Matt Fawley – "Had a great junior season. We offered him over the summer. Didn't get too many teams after him. For some reason he fell in love with the Arizona schools, and we were fortunate it was us he picked."

Andy Goodenough – "We weren't looking for a junior college quarterback when we started (recruiting). He kind of fell in our lap, and with our quarterback situation…when you get a chance to get a first team All-American quarterback…He's in our program now doing well."

Derek Hagan – "He's an athlete. He can ply corner, wide receiver...He's a kid that we knew all along. He's very versatile. Another kid that has a lot of upside."

Randy Hill – "A kid we wanted all along. 2,000 yards in any conference in the nation is tough to get. National recruit. Glad that he's a Sun Devil."

Brett Hudson – "A junior college All-American safety. A guy that we liked all along. Was heavily recruited...has a chance to contribute right now."

Robert James – "Continues the great tradition of Maryvale players coming to Arizona State. He's no different that all those other Maryvale guys, he can flat out get it done."

De'Andre Johnson – "This guy is all over the field. When you turn on game film, he's sideline to sideline as a linebacker. Makes every play...Can run and hit. We need that at inside linebacker."

Nick Johnson – "Told us he liked us right off the bat. His coaches at Chandler did a great job with him this year. Has a huge upside. He has a man's body already."

Shane Jones – "Immediate help on the defensive line."

Zach Krula – "Same high school as Grayling Love. At 275 he looks skinny as a bone, but he will be huge. He played both O-line and D-line. He'll probably redshirt. He'll be a big man someday."

Jamal Lewis – "The tight end we're looking for long term. He's skinny right now, looking like a Basketball player. He's a great athlete. His late father was an NFL player. Corners, d-tackles, and tight ends are hard to find…he's exactly what we're looking for. Fortunate to get him."

Ali Likio – "He wanted to play in the Pac-10. He fit in great here with the players. He has a dynamic personality. He has a great upper body. He's a banger inside."

J.W. Lucas – "He dominated our camp. Fid (coach Fidler) just wouldn't leave this kid alone, saying he liked him. He has a mature body…he's not afraid to throw his body around. All his coaches said he was a player. He was OK being recruited as a safety. In our defense we need safeties."

Matt Mason – "Won a state championship at Chaparral, won a national championship at Glendale Community College. We're still not sure if he'll be a tackle or an end. Third generation Sun Devil...Another guy that has a chance to help us right away." Ricky Parker – "He got better as the year went on. By the end of the year everyone wanted him. He had like 12 sacks this year. Great pass rusher. He's a good Football player."

Terry Richardson – "Explosive player. Plays in the slot like Daryl Lightfoot, except he's bigger. Can carry the ball on sweeps and reverses. One game I watched, the first four times he touched the ball he scored. Will help us right away."

Mike Talbot – "First kid that committed to us. He played all positions. We wanted this kid, but weren't sure where we were going to play him. As time went on, we said he's a perfect fit for what we do at fullback, but he could play several other positions if we need him to."

Ishmael Thrower – "Great speed guy...rush end. Very explosive, lots of speed."

Loren Wade – "Big back. True single back. Zone runner. Breaks tackles. Runs with speed and power. Highly recruited. Excited to have him in our program."

Chaz White – "Came out of no where to be recruited by us and another Pac-10 school. It was a rough battle until the end. He's related to Todd Heap, and we hope he can be as good as a player. Also played D-line."

Jamar Williams – "A guy that Brent (Guy) was on all along. At the end of the year he's named defensive player of the year, and a zillion schools are recruiting him. It didn't look good for us for a while, and Brent got him here on a visit, and he loved his visit. A speed linebacker, who runs around and makes plays all over the place."
