Larish's Heroics Help Devils Edge Sooners

The Arizona State Sun Devils pulled one out in dramatic fashion Friday night, as senior preseason All-American Jeff Larish hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the ninth to give the Devils a 5-4 victory over the Oklahoma Sooners. The win improved the Devils record to 14-12 on the season and drops the Sooners to 12-6 overall.

The Devils took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second after Willy Fox doubled home Colin Curtis and later scored himself on a Joe Persichina triple. The Devils added one more in the third off a Tuffy Gosewisch sacrifice fly and took a 3-0 lead. The Sooners struck back scoring one run in the fourth and three more in the fifth off Sun Devil starter Zechry Zinicola to tie the game 4-4. Zinicola was done after five innings having given up four runs on just two hits while striking out five. Both Sooner hits off Zinicola were singles but his control was off tonight as he walked four Sooner batters.

The game remained scoreless over the next three innings as both bullpens came in and shut the opponent down. Junior right-handed pitcher Tony Barnette did a great job in relief of Zinicola, as he pitched 2.2 scoreless innings allowing just two hits while striking out four. Senior right-hander Jason Urquidez took over for Barnette in the eighth and threw just as well, allowing two hits and no runs in his 1.1 innings pitched. Urquidez picked up the win in relief to improve his record to 4-2 on the season thanks to Larish's game winning shot. The homerun was Larish's 10th on the season which leads the NCAA.

The Devils will look to continue their solid play tomorrow as they once again host the Sooners at Packard Stadium in the second of three games. The game is scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. start. Erik Averill (4-2, 3.32 ERA) is expected to get the start for the Devils.
