Devils Dominate Sooners

Oklahoma drew first blood in the first inning, and then ASU pitcher Erik Averill slammed the door shut. The left hander pitched a complete game, and the Sun Devil offense followed through for a 5-1 victory and a series win.

Averill surrender a handful of hits, none of which were more than a single, and struck out seven. The junior improved to 5-2, with an ERA of 2.75. He dealt a couple of walks, but the run scored by the visitors was unearned. At the plate, third baseman Travis Buck and center fielder Colin Curtis paced the Devils with two hits each.

The maroon and gold scored a trio of runs in the second and never looked back. The bases were loaded for Rocky Laguna, who delivered a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 1-1. A gutsy double-steal netted the second run, and second baseman Joey Hooft's single drove in shortstop Andrew Romine for the last run of the inning. In the third, a fielder's choice by designated hitter Zechry Zinicola grew the margin to 4-1. The Sun Devils concluded their scoring on the night in the seventh when Buck tripled and proceeded to cross home plate on a Sooners' throwing error.

With the victory, ASU went to 15-12, and has come away victorious in nine of its last 12 games. They will be gunning for a series sweep Sunday at 12 p.m.. Sophomore right-hander Pat Bresnehan (1-2, 4.44 ERA) is slated to take the mound.
