The Devils took an early 1-0 lead in the first behind a Travis Buck solo homerun to right field. But the lead didn't last long as the Sooners answered right back the very next inning to score two runs off Sun Devil starter Pat Bresnehan. The Sooners went on to score one more in the top of the fourth to take a 3-1 lead but another Sun Devil homerun by senior catcher Tuffy Gosewisch in the bottom of the inning pulled the Devils within a run at 3-2. The Devils then tied the game at three in the bottom of the fifth after Buck drew a walk and later scored on a throwing error by Sooner catcher Jackson Williams after stealing third base.
The game remained tied until the seventh when Buck then lead off the inning with a double followed by a Jeff Larish single in which Buck moved up to third and Larish to second on the throw. After a Sun Devil strikeout sophomore outfielder Colin Curtis was intentionally walked to load the bases. After another Sun Devil strikeout senior second baseman Joey Hooft, who was making just his second appearance after missing 11 straight games due to a hamstring injury, came to the plate with the score tied and two men out. Hooft stepped up and delivered a huge base clearing double to centerfield that was lost in the sun by the Sooner centerfielder to put the Devils up 6-3.
The Sooners were able to score two runs in the eighth off Sun Devil reliever Tony Barnette to cut the lead to just one run, but right-handed pitcher Jason Urquidez came in and shut the rally down to pick up his first save of the season. Barnette picked up the victory for the Devils to improve his record to 2-1 on the year. Bresnehan lasted three innings in the start and was pulled for junior left-hander Brett Bordes who came in to give the Devils three scoreless innings of work.
Offensively the Devils ended up with nine hits on the day and were once again lead by junior preseason All-American Travis Buck. Buck finished the day 3-for-4 with three runs scored and one RBI including his second homerun of the year. Senior Joey Hooft went 2-for-3 with three RBI and fellow senior Jeff Larish was also 2-for-3 with one run scored. Larish also drew two intentional walks in the game and six total walks in the series, five being intentional. Senior Tuffy Gosewisch's homerun was his fifth of the season, which surpasses the four career homers he hit his three previous seasons combined.
The Devils have won 10 of their last 13 games and seem to be geared and ready to go entering Pac-10 play next Thursday against USC. Game one is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start at Dedeaux Field and will run through Saturday due to Easter Weekend.
